Photography is about capturing a moment in time, telling a story, and turning the seemingly ordinary into a piece of art.
But sometimes, through photography, one can capture the art beyond what you can see with your eyes.
I had the pleasure of taking photos of the Community Fridges throughout Denver. And while each fridge is a piece of art, itself, the true art is that of building community and taking care of others.
What Is a Community Fridge?
A community fridge project aims to reduce hunger through voluntary efforts and donations.
“The Denver Community Fridges are a network of fridges across the city that offer free food to the community, by the community. Each fridge is stocked 100% by the donations of community members, ranging from fresh produce, to commercially made prepared meals, to pantry items, and hygienic products. The fridges are a form of mutual aid, which is a function of community that focuses on using our collective time, energy, resources and money in a way that includes everybody against the harmful systems that influence access to food and promote violence against food insecure folks. Mutual aid means acting with solidarity, collaboration, care, intention, accountability not charity. For more information on what the fridges are, where to find them, and how to be involved in this movement, please visit our Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/denvercommunityfridge/”
How Does a Community Fridge Work?
The coordinators for the Denver Community Fridge Project have to secure a location for a fridge (also called a host), the artists paint the fridge, and then deliver it. Volunteers and community members fill the fridges with food and other supplies.
Because of city rules, food must not be homemade, however, donating prepared meals from a grocery store or restaurant is acceptable.
And while prepared meals, produce, and drinks are great fridge items, un-expired pantry supplies, and non-perishable health and personal items are welcomed.
Community members in need can take what they need without question.
